2001 Montana Antelope Hunt

Our 2001 antelope hunt actually started in the spring of 2000 when we sent in for our permits. We did not get drawn that year so put in for 2001 and got drawn that year. Noah and I left for the UP by way of the ferry and arrived in Wakefield MI on Thursday Oct. 4. There we met up with brother-in-law Mark Titus and father-in-law Lloyd Titus. We left Friday and made it to Bismarck North Dakota by Fri. night. Sat. afternoon saw us near Melstone Montana at our outfitter Al Bassetts ranch. We saw lots of antelope on the drive out and some nice country. Sunday we started our hunt. Noah and I hunted with Al and Mark & Lloyd hunted with another guide named Travis. Just at day break as we were getting into our hunting area, we saw a herd of elk with two bulls, one a very nice 6X6, what a sight!! We saw our first antelope about 8 AM and stalked several during the morning. Noah had a couple chances but could not make a connection. About 1PM we spotted a nice buck about 3/4 mile away in a large meadow. After a 1 hour stalk I was able to drop him at about 265 yards with my 300 Weatherby Mag. Later that afternoon Noah was able to take a nice buck at about 180 yards with his 30-06 .Mark also took a very nice buck the first day, but it took Lloyd most of the second day to get his buck. But by Monday afternoon we all had nice Montana antelope bucks to take home. Monday was spent coyote hunting and Noah and I should each have got one but both of us missed! Tuesday we went hunting coyote hunting in the morning then drove down to Little Big Horn Battlefield Monument for a visit. Headed home on Wed. We all had a good time and will undoubtedly be planning on another Montana hunt as soon as we can. Have a Good Time in the Great OutdoorsWe Sure Did,Art Smith
